Reaching youth in Uganda
Sam Oyirworth with Simon and Alex from Lungala Bible Ministries, Uganda.
Uganda has one of the youngest populations in the whole world. According to New Vision, 78% of the Ugandan population are under 30 years old.
Last month our coordinator for northern Uganda and the Congo, Sam Oyirworth, met with Simon Tumukwasibwe and Alex Tumwesigye, directors of Lungala Bible Ministries.
Simon and Alex are passionate about sharing the Gospel with the younger generation. As Simon explains, with under 30s comprising such a huge proportion of the Ugandan population:
"Tomorrow’s church here will depend on how these youths have been evangelised and discipled to carry on the great commission of the church."
When Sam met Simon and Alex he was so encouraged to hear how they have been using SOUL to help do this.
They started running the series with a group of young people last year. They worked hard to invite children and young people from local villages, many of whom have been brought up in other religions.
It was a big success, with one headmaster from a local school saying:
“I love your Christian programs, they have helped to re-shape the students who have been part of them. Some of the students you led were chased from many schools due to their indiscipline. But when you taught them the Word of God, they have totally reformed.”
This was a humbling thing for Simon and Alex to hear, and an encouragement to keep going.
After Sam's visit, they had a vision-casting meeting for SOUL and are in the process of enrolling another group.
They are hoping to have 12 students this year. Unfortunately logistics and lack of materials mean this is the maximum group size.
Below is a picture of newly enrolled students at St. John's Secondary School. Alex (on the left) is running the series and in their hands are SOUL handbooks.
Please pray for this youth work in Uganda.
